Engine smoking on start up

We have a 1986 T25 with a 1.9 petrol DG engine. It's done 140k but had the heads replaced at 100k. It runs fine and is economical (25-30mpg). It doesn't use a great deal of oil, but at start up burns a big cloud of oily smoke for 10-20 secs. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi
Possably glow plugs - can be tested in situ if you are handy with a multimeter - or take out 1 by 1 and do a battery test - google testing glow plugs for more details
haynes is helpful if you have one
