Just spent the week in Norfolk, got in last night after a beautiful 300 mile blast. Saw this rather good looking Transiit in Wroxham.






We ended up driving into a beautiful sunset, with a full moon behind us.

It's a "County" 4x4 conversion, special gearbox has a torsen centre diff I think, not sure about the funny stickers but the snorkel looks well finished at the wing. Looks like a kill switch/button on the front grille along with the 12/24v electric plug (can't remember the name) and a big bundle of wires up the driver's screen pillar. Never mind the led flashers on the grille. Military Police maybe?
Could be an ex-MOD trial/proposal vehicle (does the paint look original and not a whitevanman blow-over?) and it's 1998 ish if the plates are correct.

Seen those before. Our Electricty company uses them in tough areas. No idea who makes them for F O R D but they look the biz

A torsen diff sounds interesting. Compared to a T4 syncro below.



Sounds expensive as well.

Not sure how long those rear damper arms hanging down below the diff casing would last.

The front end looks remarkably syncro like, but are those air springs

Thats the only way I would be seen in an old tranny.

we used to have one as a recovery truck at a garage I worked at.
It was 100% pure dog sh!t.
I snapped it in half recovering a Golf off the moors, cracks right down the chassis behind the crew cab.
It spent more time in pieces that working and getting stuff for it was a nightmare.
I don't think it was advanced enough to have a torsen diff, I seem to remember that just had an old transfer case.
That was a Transit 190 crew cab.

West Glam Fire Service had 4 of them as off road rural fire fighting appliances. There was one on my station which I had to drive often. Absolute crap, gutless and would get stuck at the sign of the slightest mud. All I can say is if your thinking of getting one, give it a test off road, you'll soon change your mind.

"County" was the name of the firm who made the gearbox and did the conversion. Dagenham let them put their name on the back door.
Could well be wrong about the transfer box details. They were based on the last RWD Trannys.

They did MKII, MKIII and New Gen that I know of, not just the last RWD.
You could get more or less the full range I think.
I've seen single and twin wheelers, singles using the 100L wheels, but also seen 150's and 190's too (Class IIV, twin wheeler)

Slightly unfair, I think the engineering by County was sound enough but the platform vehicle was the main problem with the concept...
