Afternoon all, well its that time of year and started geting my converted panel van into action, new battery on, fires up first time , go for a spin after doing all the checks etc, fuel lines and a couple of things come up.

1) I seem to be getting a string smell of petrol from the front end. I have checked all pipe work and can see no leaks, any ideas.

2) After yesterdays spin, strong exhaust smell as well, possible pulling in from heater tubes.

3) Oil light can on after about an hours worh of running, oil levels ok, checked before and after no loss, I have a new sender but need some advice on how to take old one out and fit new one.

Apart from that running great. Althoug im not going to risk bus types in him so will whell my bay out insted, sorry guys.

In no particular order:
The tank it may be corroded on it's upper side. There is a hollow in the top of the tank through which the heater duct passes, it's good at collecting muck in it.
Check the pipework to the expansion tanks under the front arches, there's a few sections of rigid steel pipe in there too, rusty perhaps?
Filler pipe and rubber in the tank right hand side.

Exhaust smell could be down to corroded heat exchangers.

Is it coming from the heater vents?

Does it still come through when the heat is turned off? (assuming that the controll pods are working correctly)

If the answers are yes and no then it looks like time to replace the heat exchangers or disconnect them and live with the cold. Do not drive the van with the heater pods open, it's a potential killer.
