Rev Counter

I have just acquired a rev counter. I believe these are plug and play as the wire in number 9 carries the signal from the alternator. However is doesn't work. If I put a meter onto number 9 should I be getting a variable voltage depending on engine revs or at least some sort of reading? As I currently get nothing.

On the back of the alternator I have the main power cable, the blue wire and a red and black. I know the blue is the signal wire for charging but is the red and black the wire for the rev counter? Again should I be getting a reading here as currently there is nothing.

Thanks

should be a w connection on the alternator that's where the rev counter signal comes from and it splits on the circuit board to the bod and to the rev counter if fitted - often the track is damaged as it goes round the fold where the multiplug fits

The w connection is it marked as w? I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to run a new wire. Can the current wire be tested?

Your van may be on the cusp regards having a BOD fitted. Is the the multiconector behind the dashboard vertical or horizontal?

Ok now sorted. The connection inside the alternator is a bit dodgy. May have something to do with all of the mud. Anyway if pulled to one side and cable tied it works for now. Will probably have to open the alternator at some point to address.

For future reference the voltage at terminal is 7v.

Thanks for the input.
