Sounds to me not enough current running through.

My advice would be to check the wiring, especially the earth to starter/ gearbox and make sure there is no corrosion where it joins chassis and g/box. Remove cables, wire brush and refit and see if it helps, maybe add another earth strap.

Someone will probably give you better info but that's what I'd start with.
( I have a 1.6 td diesel and the positive lead to starter was held on by a crop clip!)

HI

Our 1.6td wouldnt start for the first time this evening - started fine on outward journey but 3 hours later nothing happened when i turned the ksy - Battery is fine as lights bright and didnt dim at all but the starter doesnt turn at all, would this clean down potentially solve that as well?

yes it wouldn't do any harm and you could eliminate dirty contacts from the list of possible reasons.

including the gearbox earth

Hi
Given it has rained most nights i had put it off, then realised i had homestart on my breakdown policy so called them, an hour later they checked the battery, then wiped down the connections and hit it with a hammer and hey presto it works again!

Thanks for the advice, very appreciated.
