2.1 mv power loss

well after a while of niggling problems the van is now buggered. to cut a very very long story short. i have been having a flicker in the rev counter for a while no other issues really. started after a very wet drive and major missfire. missfire cured but flicker was occasional. last but one trip at about 150 miles out it just lost power. flat out at 40 mph in 3rd. it then cleared and run like a train for the rest of the trip, 250 miles. last trip 400 miles no problems atall.

last weekend cut out started after a while "seemed flooded" but had major loss of power.

i`ve changed plugs, leads, cap and arm, coil, distributor afm and ecu. cleaned all the connections and the earths and the oxy sensor is working fine at idle.

convinced the coil is being fired too often causing the rpm flick.

tdi conversion is nearly ready to go in but i would like to sort this before i pull it out.

answers on a post card to my hair is well and truly pulled out.

cheers lee.

have you looked at the fuel surply, if as you say the ingnition system has all been replaced i would start looking at the injectors and work my way back.

had a simular thing happen to me on the way back from coney. ran like all weekend and on the way back started miss fireing, the rev counter was dancing all over the place, after a little faffing around in the 3rd services (3rd time we pulled in) swaped over the condencer for a spire on i had board. all was good again, back on the road.

Try a new ECU temp sender.

Stop p*ssing around and get a propper engine in running on the right fuel. You will get sod all for an MV second hand anyway, they are rubbish... Just sell the heads and throw the rest in the bin

(of course I am joking by the way  )

If you throwing the rest in the bin then i`ll have the bottom end please :D

Worth checking the leads again, had the same on mine with a lead breaking down and arcing out.

Sorry to hear yours is giving so much grief. Does rather sound like a tracking problem. Have you looked at it under cover of darkness to see if there's any lightshow?
Ignition module? Just a thought.

thanks guys, leads have been swapped back to the origonals and a mates set also tried with no luck.

tdi is nearly ready and aidan doing the box and diff next weekend but it really depresses me that i cant sort this. i feel the rev counter flicking must be related to the the coil being fired incorrectly which in turn will cause power loss but what is causing the coil to be fired in this way. hall sensor has been changed so i`m presuming the signal to the ecu is correct if the ecu is firing the coil badly what is influencing it.

russel the temp 2 sensor is only 18 months old, could this cause the ecu to fire the coil wrongly. the fuel at idle and at non loaded cruise is spot on lambda controll working super.

if i cruise at 2000rpm and then come off the throttle sharply the rev counter flicks up to 4500 / 5000rpm every time. when i disconnected the oxy sensor this stopped happening however the needle still flicked upward whilst left to idle. "actual engine rpm remains constant at 900 when this needle flicking occurs"

it does behave exactly like a tracking problem and initially this was the case no3 lead total breakdown and spark show. since i`ve done ALL of the ht system i`ve not seen anything, i even sprayed water over the components after i was happy sorting the initial problem and all was good. going to try this again just because its the onlything i havent done 6 times now.

greatfull for your thoughts, with faults like this good to just talk about them some times thing pop up.

Its obviously the thingamagic connected to the wosnim that make the round bit turn around the square spline, causing a bit of chaffing on the inner side of the soft section of the wiring loom!!!

And thats about as good as it gets on the mechanical front for me.

I'll help with all the bespoke furniture stuff.

Don't worry, will be awesome with the mtdi, and our little trip to a local beach ( identity top secret ) video will blow even Jed Speilberg Walsh away.

Chin up pal.

Will have to be by prior invite into the highly acclaimed exclusive club of Freds Garage/Penininsula Construction Nutters Association.

Have spoken to Dr Lee and after an emergency general meeting you have been granted access to the club if you can give a rendition of Calon Lan around the camp fire!!

Hi chap,

I had the same problem on an SS engine and it was the lambda sensor (o2), my bus idled perfect but had all the same high speed running issues like yours. Remember that lambda sensors can be very intermittent as they start to fail. I have a new one if you'd like to try it,

thanks for the offer AL. the lambda is new and its switching fine gas is spot on without load on the engine. disconnected the van is still under powered and rev counter still flicks at idle. drowned the ht system in water today and no tracking. i even stuck my finger in to everything lectric and no tickles.
there is a cure in the corner of the workshop and it looks like this.

Mine's black and it has a VNT...

You may beat me to it though as my project's taking its own time.
