You need to start by looking at what's suddenly changed ? If it was fine before then what did you do ?

Check and refill coolant levels and thoroughly bleed the system (perhaps a few times). Report back.

Has the timing been touched ? Is the distributor cap seated and plugs gapped correctly ?

There are a few members in your area, hopefully they'll take the time to help ?

Firstly don't drive it until you / we have figured out what is up with it !
These engines can get damaged by overheating.
The cooling system is a bit odd.

First things first =
Have you looked in the 2 white plastic water containers in the left of the engine bay ?

The left one with the cap on it that looks like a Daleks head should be full to the brim and be fairly clean either reddish or bluish coloured water (the colour being antifreeze) - It should not be "milky", oily or otherwise very mucky.

The right hand tank (just behind the numberplate) should be about half full.

Let us know your findings re the above... and we WILL help :)

The fan is kicking in at the front but having no effect.
Thinking the thermostat is stuck buffered !

Well if it is only the thermostat that is easy the, :) just take care of the plastic housing and it's 4 securing bolts as both are a bit delicate  and the plastic housing (post 1985) are a bit rare and therefore expensive !

Is it just the dashboard lights that are giving you these messages or is the engine showing any signs of actual overheating such as water loss or steam or cold air coming from the heater when it should be hot (on your left knee :) )

ok, lets get to the crooks of this.....

from cold, you start up having checked the coolant levels , and the temp gauge is at cold, and the coolant level warning light flashes for a few seconds and goes out?

run the engine for a few mins, temp gauge goes up to about a 1/4 and light not flashing?

after a while longer the gauge continues to rise?

ok, so is it really getting that hot that quick, if you switch the heater on is it red hot?

if the engine isnt getting that hot, we can assume the temp sender is duff, or the wiring is damaged.
if it is getting that hot that quick, its a mechanical problem, quite possibly the water pump failed.

Is the engine under the engine lid actually getting very hot ?

You need to get this to someone who knows about this, pref someone who knows about VW T25's

It seems then that if the needle is going right over and the light is flashing in just 2 or 3 minutes, ( Is this driving it or just ticking over ?) then the engine is not getting overheated, more a case of the warning system is malfunctioning. Most mechanics would be able to tell if the engine is ACTUALLY overheating or if it is a warning system malfunction.

As I say "You need to get this to someone who knows about this, pref someone who knows about VW T25's"

Any volunteers near Mansfield ?

p.s. =
No doubt Steve (mocki) will be along soon with more ideas :ok

Sounds like a pump-swap is in order. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118

At that age your's should be EARLY cooling system ... unless someone's swapped it over before of course.
