Lambda Sensor

Hi All
I've been running my Multivan for a few weeks without the lambda sensor connected. Vans run nicely, for most part. I've had to disconnect the battery a few times, to reset the ECU as its been racing, or at start up in the morning running at 3000rpm! So disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes resets to factory I'm told. I've noticed on a run that it does pull a little, especially at around 70mph, and a couple of times its stalled. Just died completely at lights, or a roundabout, both the last times were after the van had been running for a good hour and a half.
Would replacing the lambda sensor have any bearing on this? Was going to do it anyway as I think I'll get a few miles per gallon more but would an absent sensor be causing the stalling and slight missing issue I have?
cheers
Ian
