thought i would start a new thread as i have made progress getting my van started althogh not there yet,
basically wot happened was my fuel filter got clogged up and stopped fuel getting through getting into the carbs, now i have replaced the fuel filter i cannot get the fuel to evenly and steadily squirt through to the carbs instead its kinda bubbling and squirting fuel every now and then, wot should i look at next? fuel pump? how do i take off the fuel pump to clean it out? the fuel filter is full of fuel and the fuel seems to be going through the new filter but getting stuck somewere between fuel filter and carburettors? should i be cleaning jets out in the carbs? how do i go about this?,
thanks for everyones help so far im sure i will get there in the end

Not sure its definitely this but there is a pushrod that activates the fuel pump which can wear down
There are 2 hex heat bolts that hold the pump on and a replacement gasket can be made of from a cereal packet

I guess you haven't got a Haynes manual yet then?
The black arrows point to the push-rod mentioned above, and the filter I mentioned in the other post.

right i have just moved the van so that the front end is uphill slightly and i am now getting fuel thru to the left carb but the right 1 is barely letting any fuel through at all, if i spray easy start down the carb throats it starts first time and then cuts out and if i just pump the throttle really hard then start it it will start and then cut out.
this leaves me thinking the possible fault is either
a problem between the fuel filter and the carbs (fuel pump not pumping properly) or air leak in fuel pipe
or that the fuel wich i put in the van before i had this problem was contaminated or dodgy in some way,
i am just thinking maybe i should put some redex through it to try and clean out possible crap in the fuel pump

just read somthing about if i have crud in the float bowl of one of my carbs it could block the fuel coming through,
can i clean the float bowl without removing the whole carb?

Check none of the electrical connections of the fuel solenoids on the right hand carb have come loose. If you pull the spade connectors off with the ignition switch on, and then push them on again you'll hear the solenoids clicking if they're working.

Not really.

the fact that it starts on easy start and the lack of a good clean squirt of fuel in one of the carbs says to me its definatly a fuel problem not electrical,
after the fuel filter you have the fuel pump -then carburettors, wich part of the carburettor could stop the fuel flowing into the carb properly as i have fuel coming from the pump so the pump must be ok?

The solenoids are electrically operated fuel valves. If one of the connections was loose it would shut off part of you fuel supply depending on which one was disconnected. So the problem could be "electrical".
If the fuel filter in the tank line didn't completely disintegrate then no dirt should have reached your carbs. If dirt has got past the filter then the next thing to check is the filter in the fuel pump. If that's clean then no dirt should have made it to the carbs. You could check to see if any of the rubber fuel lines from the pump to the carbs have collapsed internally. Try draining a pint of petrol out of the tank into a glass bottle and see if it looks clear. If there's water in it the water will form a layer at the bottom because it's heavier than petrol.

I've never had to check it but looking at the diagram it looks like it's just held it place by the threaded plug. You might even be able to get it out with the fuel pump still in-situ on the van. It'll probably be clean, but if it's not rinse it out with petrol.

right ive taken that filter out cleaned it and put it back in but there wasnt any dirt in it, inside the fuel pump looked nice and shiny to, im thinking maybe i should take the diagphram out and clean that? is it ok to remove the diagraphm while the pump is still on the van?
