That's my point - whilst somewhat gallant - stripping down a box without prior knowledge, or experience, or maybe the right tools, is possibly out of the frying pan into the fire
These boxes are usually high mileage and require a comprehensive strip-down and rebuild when internal selection problems occur, and very few on here go for it
Most put a 2nd hand box in or have it rebuilt by a known authority on them, so it doesn't go back in and fail again - do we know which box it is ? 4/5 speed.
Haynes wouldn't have this info, ETKA is the VW parts software which itemises each part.
If you can't describe where and what the part probably is, other than a clip, we're probably not going to be able to help much...
If you go to your nearest VW parts counter or maybe GSF, they might let you scan the gearbox pictures within ETKA and point at the bit, which undoubtedly will be back-order from Germany. You can download a copy of ETKA I believe, will try to find the link for you... unless you can be more positive and descriptive about what this part is.
