Are my headlights any good?

Hello,
1988 E reg turbo diesel panel van (JX).
I have seen "upgrade kits" for headlights, my headlights say "H4" on them, and I find them adequate for all driving, whether on dark lanes or the motorway.
Are my headlights considered to be any good, or could they be improved?
Cheers,
Steve

I believe that there is an upgrade by altering the wiring to cut out the voltage loss that is in the original set up. It seems to be quite well known- by others

If you find em ok, why bother changing them? I've got an 87 and mine are "pooh". The type with the little reflecter that reflects the bulb back onto the larger outer reflecter. I am always trying to look further up the road than the lights illuminate. If yours are ok I would leave well alone.

Simon Baxter provides a relay upgrade kit. Despite all of these naysayers it should improve your headlights substantially.
What it does is feeds higher voltage more directly to the headlights, rather than the torturous route the OEM-spec provides. If you want brighter lights that would be your way forwards, initially.

If your happy with them, fair enough, leave them alone.
If not upgrade, it's quite a simple concept.
I run one of my kits on my Caddy because where I live is all unlit coutry lanes and I don't want to add some gnarly extra spotlights.
Im running 130w mains, 90w dipped, try that on your standard wiring! fizzle, pop, bang "whats that burning smell"
I have the parts to make them on the shelf, I make them up to order with all the crimps you need and some destructions, you only need basic tools and they really do improve your vision of the road even without the bigger bulbs.
Oh, and with my kit there are no issues with the main beam tell tale not working and if for some reason there is a problem with it it can be swapped back to standard wiring within minutes bypassing the upgrade loom.
