fuel gauge

hi all i have a t3 1983 transporter and the fuel gauge is all over the place,
i ran out of fuel the other day but the gauge said it was just above red is this a common fault and do i need to change the sender or just live with it?

Or change the sender..
You decide. There might be some improvement over your current readings.

Mine is pretty inaccurate.... can swing between 1/2 and 1/4 tank very quickly, think this is probably because the tank is wide and shallow, so if the van leans then all the fuel goes away from the sender, could be wrong, just my theory

I just make sure I top up when it gets near the red.

Mine seems to drop from reading 1/4 to nothing within about 10 miles. I know theres fuel in the tank though.
