ignition light on continually

Have just bought a t25, and am working my way thru a few minor problems, before I risk driving any distance in it.

One is that the ignition light stays on continually.

I've had someone put a voltmeter on the battery connections and he reckoned that there was charge coming from the alternator - on the basis that the reading went up from (from memory) something like 13.5v at tickover to 13.65v when rev'd a little.

note: as the van has been parked up a while, the battery has less charge than it might have.

Is anyone able to confirm whether or not that test is adequate to confirm that the battery is being charged?

Also, is anyone able to suggest what are the best things to check to correct the error with the light?

Your suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

Yes it is a good test to check for charging
My check revealed a 14.2v charge

I think the continuous red light fault lies elsewhere.

OK, thanks. Fingers crossed that I don't find myself with a flat battery.

I reckon I've done more than enough miles now to know that the battery is definitely charging. Plus it was checked by a 2nd garage that did the wheel bearings for me, and they said it was charging too.

So having failed at changing or fixing the heater fan (see other thread ;)), this problem is the last on the list for fixing ... so .... does anyone have ideas for what the problem might be please?

Check the blue wire from the back of the alternator .... this is the signal wire to tell the charge light the battery is being charged.

Hi,

As well as checking the wire as Ian suggests, also worth checking the multi-pin connector on the bottom of the instrument panel. The connectors ofetn corrode / burn out causing all sorts of fun dashboard lighting!

Cheers,

Alex

I had that problem on my old T2. It turned out to be a regulator fault. It was overcharging the battery evidently. Changed it and the problem went away.

thanks, but I bought the van with a live 'buzzer of doom' (as well as the ignition light problem), which a quick clean up of those contacts cured - so I'm presuming it's nothing about that which is causing the ignition light to stay on.
