Hello all
i've just bought my first campervan, a westy 2.0ltr. There seams to be an oil leak as, when i start the engine from cold oil is dripping slightly onto the offside heat exchanger causing smoke and me chocking trying to suss out were it is coming from. as i am new to vw engine's could it be that the pushrod seal has worn away?
cheers anyone

Hi west E, you're probably on the right track suspecting one or more of the push rod oils seals. The problem could also be the rocker box cover gasket.
This question was asked last week by mad372 under the title 'Help! oil leak'. Have a look at Tech Q&A half way down page 2.

i'll check it out. i allready replaced the rocker gaskets and still got the leak though and a lung full of the black stuff. if i need to change the pushrod seals, how east is it. i've been racking my eyes over my haynes, but i ain't no mechanic.

It's a piece of apple.......can do a side in 30 minutes easy. Haynes actually gives a very good description - go for it......
Remove the tubes carefully to avoid damaging them, but they may need a tug with molegrips or similar if the seals aren't too worn. Take care with the little springy thing, and look at the pic in Haynes to put it back in correctly to support the tubes. Putting the replacement tubes in/replacing the tubes you need to give them a knock in - the end of a broom handle or a suitably sized socket will do the job perfectly, you can feel when they're seated correctly.....

hi jen
do you leave the hydraulic tappets in place?, whip out the pushrods change the seals, refit and reset the tappets? dont want to shaft the engine with my limited skills!

Leave the tappets - you don't need to touch them.....(for now anyway...).....
