word of warning

driving to the lanes this morning, i was sitting at a set of traffic lights and gently pulled (tryed too) away when there was a loud (expencive sounding) clonk, and no drive, engaged the decupler and slowly crept in to a side road,
on inspection around the back on of the drive shafts was not conected to the gear box. i know what your all thinking he forgot to tighten up the bolt when he re fitted the engine and box, when i finished the install i ran everything cheaking that everything was tight, i even went so far as to buy a net set of the lock washers. all the bolts were still located in the cv joint.managed to bolt up 5 of the bolts and go laning so it was not a lost day, the outher side were all tight but i managed to just crack them up a little to give me piece of mind.

i have just got in and droped the joint again and ran a tap through the thread on the output flange, and the bolt bit all good. its all bolted back up as it should be.

spot the last bolt to have come undone?

may be worth having a look at yours dont even want to think what would have happend if i were at speed and this happened!

I had the bolts come a bit loose after a cv replacement,i think this happened because i didnt clean all of the grease from the flange and cv mateing surfaces,as the joint warmed up the grease squished out?.

Something very similar happened on 'erselfs 2cv last year - driving along, and all of a sudden there was a frantic banging noise. She stopped, phoned me, and we figured out one driveshaft inner had come undone from the gearbox. The exhaust box was a write-off, the brake caliper & engine ducts were damaged. No threadlock used (none normally used), original split washers in place on all.

This is where it gets bizarre... Those bolts hadn't been touched since the car'd been rebuilt 25,000 miles and ten years ago. The same bolts on the other side of the car had come loose, too.

I blame pixies.

Always use some thread lock on them. If I remember correctly from years ago the torque is 45NM!

I think I can see remnants of thread lock on the bolts to be fair, but without clean threads on the bolts and flanges I would think it's pretty useless.

That was exactly what happened to me three weeks ago today - even down to the last bolt bending like that. I had to pull the hub shaft as well to drill out the remains of the last bolt which was an added pain but at least allowed me to to fit longer studs which I'd needed to do See this thread: https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=81150" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As you'll see it has also happened to Syncrosimon. In my case it totally knackered the CV as well but at least I've replaced it with one of Brickwerx HD versions. I torqued everything up and so far have checked three times. It will be a while before I'm confident that its permanent. Don't forget the lock washers when it all goes back - I did at first because I'm used to doing Beetle drive shafts which don't have them.

If I was a betting man I'd have a few quid on that we are not the only ones this has happened to!

Ooops - sorry - just seen that you had the lock washers! Important though.

Mine gave no warning either, I was going along at the time too......
I tightened them without a torque wrench just to get me home from Jeds and was going to tighten them the next day, that day ended up a week, and hey presto.

none of mine have the washers on, all original boots, 20 years of debris on them, looks like they left the factory like that? On the rear the bolts are bigger as well, so don't think the washers would fit? Could be wrong there though.
I've now had three CVJ's apart, and put them back on and i'm paranoid enough to check them periodically over the following couple of weeks, so far haven't found any loose....... Won't stop me checking though

Had the drive shaft of mine recently so will be checking them. I'll make sure the engine has cooled before doing so seeing the blister on Neil's arm.
