have been given an R reg passat TDi,high milage but pretty good and good bodywork,it has a couple of electrical issues, only two doors open on central locking (drivers and the boot lid),the fuel filler flap does not open when the switch is pressed,a live wire from battery to the switch opens it,are these likely to be fiddly or expensive to repair?,cannot tinker on it at the moment as have not actually picked it up and things not working properly bug the hell out of me,thanks for any ideas

passats have an issue with water ingress through the pollen filter housing, check for a wet passenger footwell carpet.. There is a box of electrikery that sits under the passenger seat this can get water logged. fix is to redo the seal under the pollen filter housing and then start trying to find and replace corroded wiring. Also if there is a fault with the door seal can allow water into the A pillar area I think I have read this can cause door locking issues. Also build up of leaves and crud can prvent water draining out of the bit at the bottom of your windscreen.

Depends on which Passat they changed the model in 1997, earlier models had vacuum operated central locking.
