Cutting out on idle, why?

Hi, my van has suddenly started cutting out on idle. Cant work out why, been running fine up to now and runs fine driving, just cuts out when I stop.
Happened after filling up with petrol (at busy Shell garage), but this hasn't caused a problem in the past so not sure this is relevant.
Any ideas where to start? I am not very technical so please limit replies to anything easy to check myself, or it is off to the garage.
It is a 1984 1.9DG engine.
Thanks, Janine

hi mate,
do a searc on here for idle cut out valve or cut off valve.....sits on the carb....and if it isn't working properly, it won't allow the van to idle.

There is lots of posts to look up, however as you was topping up with petrol when it started to play up,
id suggest two points... if you have run it so low on petrol that the crud has clogged your filters up? there are 3 ... 1 under van by fuel tank and 2nd in engine bay then 3rd is a small one inserted into fuel inlet pipe on the carb take it out and give it a clean.
Also whilst changing the fuel filters check for water in fuel

There should only be one exterior filter (next to the tank) That's how it came from the factory.
... and one filter in the carb
any more is utterly unnecessary as it will create a resistance to fuel delivery.

I had this problem (or similar) check it out here: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=81098
The vacuum pipe seemed fine when taken off but obviously wasn't as replacing it solved the problem. I didn't test it beforehand just ordered replacement off Brickwerks. At a tenner, if it didn't work, no probs.

Hi Kev.. good point i have read this prior however as i brought the van with the additional filter in place i assumed this was correct (or adleast not a issue which would cause problems) would you recommend i revert back to the original spec then? is the resistance issue that dramatic?
advise appreciated
