Gear Stick diameter anyone?!!

Hello all

Posted before and received excellent advice on fitting eyelids to our new camper - many thanks, tis done!

I am trying to buy a pool ball gear knob for Betty Blue the 1980 Aircooled bus without my fella finding out as it's part of his birfdee pressie, but to get a real one I have to tell the seller the diameter of the gear stick (apparently 12mm or 14mm)! Yes - a bizarre question I realise but does anyone know the diameter of an original gear stick of this particular year of bus please?!! I guess I should add it's a right hand drive.

I would of course just go & bloomin measure it but he's in posession of the bus till sunday (doing the dreaded rust near front bumper) and I can't sneakily do it!!

Hope someone can help - roll on summer for happy camping for all!

Best Wishes

Soulsoulsista

The (hollow) inside is ten ...I know that from fixing my broken one. The walls are deffo thicker than 1 mm, so that would make it a 14 mm gearstick

Hi
Sorry to correct you but Aircooled are generally 12mm.

Early 12mm
Late 14mm

Apparently there was a crossover in sizes at some stage, only now this from purchasing a repair kit from Brickwerks.

Just gone and checked on my 81 aircold 12 mm it is, so unless yours was replaced unlikely to be 14 mm

early is the thinner one due to it being a solid bar.
later are larger and hollow tube!
