OK, so - i really really want to install Sat Nav, but it *has* to be removable.

Problem is, the van has no cigarette lighter socket, which is how this kind of thing normally works (or so I'm told).

Given that there's tons of electricity in my van (what with a leisure battery as well as normal car battery), how can I make this happen?

drill a hole in the dash on the vertical bit between the glovebox and the broadcast radio reciever and fit a cigar lighter socket, available from mapli, halfwits, and dozens of other places, then run a wire from the back of it to the fuse box, onto the fuse it should be connected

If you don't want to drill holes in your dash you can get sockets that don't need to be flush mounted in a panel.

I have one for my minidisk player that I located within easy reaching distance of the glove box under the dash. I then have the power cable, along with the line out going to the stereo, coming up through the ash tray. Quite neat and tidy.

Alternatively - get a map and learn to read it - they're splashproof, the batteries never go flat, you can leave them out on the seat and thieves just walk on by and they also come in large format, rather than that awful 'letterbox' size Sat Navs come in.

Sometimes the old ways are better (and far nicer and more aesthetically pleasing and less likely to get nicked)

Can't understand the craze for Sat-Navs.

Buy a decent map and have a quick look at where you want to go before you set off. Just before you arrive at the last tricky bit, have another look.

Really easy and saves time mucking about fitting the things, programming them and keeping them up to date.

It's just a gadget, really. You might as well say why use a map when you can rely on signs, sheer luck and asking when you get lost.

I was a bit concerned that using it was turning off my brain but now I find I can use it my brain for other things like watching the road instead of wondering where the flip I am.

Totally agree Horza,I wouldnt be without mine,they show you the road ahead ,warn you of the turnings on roundabouts so you can get in the right lane and take you directly to your destination , warn you of speed cameras,even tell you where the next petrol station is.
Do maps do all that?

Why by a campervan when i could use a tent? Tents are much cheaper, you can carry them, they're less likely to be nicked or broken into, no running costs....



Basically, I would like to have SatNav. So I shall get it. Personal choice, innnit?
