We're off to France in August ,but we're having a few problems with European Breakdown Cover..We're insured with Glynwoods for the van but the only European Cover they offer bases the cost of repatriation of the vehicle based on the Glasses Guide book value... ...What use is that for a twenty one year old campervan that's not in the guide...Sheesh ..So has anybody bought any Breakdown cover that doesn't have such a stupid clause...Ta Guys and Gals.

As I told you in reply to your PM the only one I know of is Flux Rescue so I'll be watching the replies with interest as well

Ive used the RAC on their 'single european trip' policy several times covering a classic car. Im a member so im not sure if the deal is open to all, but its worth a call. I'll be giving Adrian Flux a call too to compare.

You have to have insurance cover through Flux and can only start their Flux Rescue cover on the renewal/start date.

Check the RAC EU cover they have 'the clause' in it as well.

Have glynwoods changed the breakdown cover then as we have the full alps cover (runs out in may) this was the main reason we went with them as having an agreed value with them ment the van would come back home if anything went wrong that i couldnt fix myself.

we used the AA before, it is costly for single trips but if it helps you out its got to be worth the money

Hmm thought so, it'll be RAC for me then.

Ok ..Britannia rescue do an annual breakdown for Uk and Europe (12months) which had the same clause about repatriation based on Glass's book value..When asked about vehicles not in the glass's guide they agreed that if not in the guide they would cover the cost of repatriating the vehicle (we will get this in writing).... Normally this would cost about £175 a year...but they do deals if you are in certain unions/ organisations and since Mrs Pocolow is in Unison we can get this for .......Drum role.....£99... ... Policy taken out before they change their minds..job done.

Oh good job I read this thread - I have insurance through my bank account, all good for the UK but I just checked the small print and it doesn't cover campervans over 11years old in Europe.

Only one trip planned for France this year so will look into the single trip stuff. Cheers!

Given the stories i've heard about insurance companies not repatreating the van, does anyone know how much it would cost to do this oneself in the event of a bad breakdown. Thinking of just foregoing the insurance , taking the risk and paying to ship the van back should the worts happen! (Only going as far as France)...

I have euro breakdown cover for £99 extra from van insurance provider scenic, but haven't read the small print. The sales rep recommended it so I'm hoping its appropriate for the van, the age of which he knew. the first time we travelled with Sea France, we bought single trip breakdown cover with the ferry tickets. We have travelled a little in Spain, Italy and France and never needed to use the cover, touch wood! but saying that I blew the engine at the Trafford centre , I wouldn't take the chance of driving abroad without breakdown cover, Good Luck the best holidays are taken in VW campervans

Ive just been offered 13 days Euro insurance with RAC for £98 which int too bad. It contains 'the clause' but im thinking, as mentuoned, that worst ca repatriation of the van wouldnt cost £4500 which is the rough value. Im fairly happy to go ahead.

Interestingly i phoned Performance Direct who we are insured with and have uk breakdown with and they said it would only cost 40 quid to extend this to euro breakdown cover for the year!! So i've taken this out in the hope it will save me the cost should the worst happen. Seems too good to be true though...

Ive paid £255 with sureterm direct for my insurance and it also includes breakdown cover aswell.
I havent checked all the small print but they say if the worst happens they will repatreate the van seems to be a really good deal.

Get the insurance schedule and READ the small print, a 'Well she told me ..... ' doesn't work well from the side of a French motorway. Verbal agreements aren't worth the paper they're written on etc etc. I'm not trying to scare you ... remember I'VE BEEN THERE. Flux Rescue brought us home.
