What T25 to buy for a Tow Car?

I am currently looking for a T25 van to camp in, and use as a tow-wagon for my track car.

Given my budget I can really only hope for a 1.9 wasserboxer or a 1.6TD. I am going to do everything possible to avoid a 1.6D/1.7D. Of the 1.9 wbx or 1.6td which would be the best to go for to do some towing? I will eventually look at a conversion, but it could be 12 months before I have the money.

Just after your thoughts really....

Thanks.

I tow a small inflatable R.I.B. plus outboard engine and large awning. the total approx weight of tow is 350 to 400 kg......total weight (van fully laden with luggage + tow) 2.2 tonnes
60 mph is achieved easily on the flat but gradients are speed sapping.

I live with it

1.9 dg '86 high top

You might want to look for one that has already had an engine upgrade to a decent sized TD, there must be a few about by now!

Don't knock the 1.7 as a tow vehicle though, I've seen some huge caravans on the back of them.

I use a 1.9DG panel van for towing my 205Pug and trailer without any problems.

It may not be the quickest or the most powerful tow vehicle out there, but it is more than capable of doing the job.

i have seen a t25 towing a rolls royce on the M6

just make sure you change the diff and gearbox oil in the van you buy with quality oil

plus i think the dog leg 5 speed box had a lower first gear for heavy loads

I used to tow an MG Midget and later a Westfield SE to racetracks all over the country (and a few bits of Europe) behind my '83 1.9DG hightop camper with no problems. It'd travel faster than is legal on motorways but you did have to stir the gearbox about a bit on hills ;).
