Throttle return spring

I'm having problems with the throttle return spring not returning fully leaving the engine idling
way too fast. Everything appears to be ok visually though the long spring feels very weak.
It does return but not quite fully. I have lubricated all the moving parts and you can pull it back
the last few millimetres manually to lower the revs back down. Any tips on resetting or replacing
the obvious / where to source parts if necessary would really help.

It's a 1991 automatic 2.1 WBX

Cheers, Al.

mine was the same got a cable tie and pushed it about half way through the spring and joined it up
hence making the spring shorter temp fix about 3 years ago still on my 2.1 auto and working fine

had the same problem.(my plate under body parted company) re fixed with bolt but kept sticking .

quick fix was a bungy cord from pedal to door handle.

now looking to put return spring mech under the pedal as to assist return

I had this problem on my old van. It could mean that the throttle cable may be partially siezing up inside the tube that runs from front to back. A small amount of engine oil dribbled into the tube where the cably comes through to the carb may assist. It is fiddly and it takes a bit of time as there a limited space between cable and tube. I used an oil can with a tiny spout. It worked for me. It costs nothing to do and if it works it saves messing around with springs etc. Also make sure that the mechanism below the foot pedal is also lubricated and not sticking. Good luck.

Had this problem on my 1985 van and tried all the recommended tips and slow running was still too fast. Turned out that under the foot pedal under the van is a cable adjustment, well there was on mine. a soak in WD 40 and some adjustment and all was fine ever since . Don't know why it had altered.
