I am used to temp gauge needles being in the middle of the gauge for normal running ?
well my west , the needle stays in-between the first little segment on the display ?
is this normal for these ? or is my gauge/sender messing about ?

Usually they sit around the centre led.

, will try touching the temp wire to ground and see what effect that has , might be the sender

No mate, to complete the circuit the body of the sender is earthed via the casing its screwed into, the casing wasnt making a very good earth contact to the rest of the engine, higher resistance = lower reading, probably due to being refitted with too much gasket cement in the past, so I ran an earth wire from one of the casing bolts to another bolt on the engine and this brought the gauge up to just below half when running normal. In an ideal world I would have taking the casing off, cleaned the facing and bolts up and remounted it - but the wire will do for now

Mine starts way to the left out of sight and when up to temp it sits at about 3/8ths up the up the dial. Never been able to work out why. I've replaced the sender and it made no difference.
