Accelerator cable

Howdy dooo,
I need to change my accelerator cable. The one on the van now runs through a plastic tube which is broken in places and generally gnarly, but the cable from JK appears to by just bare cable, is it alright going on as is? Maybe hammerite it before putting it on. Or is plastic tubing necessary?
