i have been hunting high and low for the missing pieces off tinware that i need for my Aircooled bus and i have just came across this

does any1 think that it would be a bad idea to knock up the missing pieces of my tinware from this stuff? it reflects heat so it would stop all that heat getting into my engine bay from the exhaust below,

i am also thinking of using it over the top of my insulation inside the van to keep the heat in

They're made of polystyrene!!!!!!!!!!!!! How long do you think they'll last in the +60mph airflow under and around the van when it's moving? You'd be better off buying some 2-3mm aluminium sheeting and cutting and bending it to shape.

u can buy stuff from baq wich is for the same purpose of reflecting heat but it comes in a roll and is not polystyrene backed, surely this will work then, would be easy to shape into wotever size pieces needed to cover every nook and cranny, i would probly double or triple it up to make it thicker, i had a friend who made a shelter for his kan air filter out of it to stop heat soak and it worked perfectly

The tin-ware on an air-cooled engine is there to duct cooling air around the engine not just to stop heat getting into the engine bay. I know this isn't really for a T25 but have a read.

If you still fancy cooking your engine then feel free to fill your engine bay with tin-foil and loft insulation.

I may replace my chocolate fireguard with that stuff.

im not trying to be rude, i cant get my head around why using sheet metal is so much better than using a sheet of heatproof foil, surely both will do the same job, ideally the origional metal tinware would be better but like i said before i cannot get my hands on it and do not have the skills to use sheet metal, i dont see why it would be such a huge problem to temporarily use heatproof foil untill i can get my hands on the correct parts, surely it would be better than just having gaping holes allowing all that heat from the exhaust in?,

please explain your logic clearer,

those proper metal tin ware pieces arnt just stuck in there there made from the correct thickness metal specially shaped to do the job! Tin foil etc wont work the same way at all!

why using sheet metal is so much better than using a sheet of heatproof foil, surely both will do the same job,

When your van is stationary the heat proof foil will deflect some of the heat from your exhaust away from the engine bay. What it won't do is direct the cooling air from your fan around the cylinders to cool them.

When you're doing 60mph the airflow under the van will probably shred the foil and pull in out the back of the van if you're lucky. If you're not lucky it'll end up wrapped around your fan, alternator and throttle linkage and your van's next stop will be a scrap yard.
