Busted wiper spindle

For a while my windscreen wipers have been waving at passers by on windy days. So ive decided to fix it today, I removed the right one (offside) put some stickey tape on the spindle and tightened it up and its worked. Now here's the problem I trided the same on the other and when tightening the bolt, it kept on turning and didnt get tight so I tried to get it off and the spindle just turned so it wont come off
Not sure what has broken, but somthing sure has.
What have I done and has anyone any idea how I can get to the back. Is it through the back of the dash or the grill
Hope that someone can help
Cheers Jim

inside of the van behind the dash
drop the glovebox and you can see the spindle on the n/s
with the arm removed check the spindle, the spindle will have splines for the arm, use a stanley blade or similar and strike each spilne. the metal from the arm (aluminium) fills the splins so no grip can be had.
hope fully it will just be the nut thats worn and a new one will sort it

How bad is it on the driver's side?
Cleaning the splines on the spindle, I found that some ham-"interfered with" numpty managed to shear the spindle whilst over-tightening the nut. They've drilled and tapped the end, and there's a screw in, but it's not exactly confidence-inspiring...
