2.1 Injection, Convert To Carb - Feedback Required

Hi Guys

My 2.1 injection is giving issues along the lines of spluttering, choking and some form of backfire. Only when the engine is at it running temperature, as soon as you start to pull away its at this point it struggles but once you got some revs its seems fine till you stop at a junction and then same issues occur.

I have found some topics on the forum here and this sounds pretty much the same as this topic - https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=72695

I am trying to get hold of a Fuel Pressure Gauge, 1 on ebay and Hopefully that will do the trick.

I use my bus every day and need it for work, it's my 3rd bus and I really want to make it reliable. Whilst trying to buy replacement parts for some preventative maintenance it appears for the injection engine there is no hope for the parts to keep it going or even fix my current problem.

So after a long boring intro of my problem, hers my question.

Q - Would you replace an injection with a Carb. If yes, what Carb and what would I need to do the job and parts etc?

I think it would be great to take out the loom on the engine completely and then slap in the carb, is it me or do I not need so many wires. I just want to take the engine back to basics. Resulting in an engine that can be mechanically maintained.

Bus Details - Multivan 1998 2.1 DJ, Auto Gearbox, left hand drive.

Thanks for reading me :)

We have a 2.1 DJ fitted into what was a 1.9DG and the Pierburg and manifold bolted straight onto the DJ and it runs fine on both petrol and gas without any retuning.

Others will no-doubt be able to advise you re the wiring

Cheers Ian, thats great news and will give me alot of options on spares. Theres just no support on the injection so I think going Carb is the future for my Bus.

Thanks

Does anybody know what I am meant to have as far as the control unit goes, I seem to have two of them. Acording to the Haynes Manual I should only have One (digijet/digifant).

If I change to Carb the control unit (digijet/digifant) from the injection gets replaced with an Idle stabilisation unit which looks very simular.

Any Idea's

another alterative for you :ok
dellorto 40,s the advantage is that you can jet them correctly, and there is no need for any of the leccy bits at all.
as ian used an original dg engined bus he already had the idle stabilisation in place , the manifold heater thingy and whatever other bits n bobs needed to
run the pierbu££er.
another alternative could be to trip out the existing ecu and have anothe one built to your spec, it could be a more simple system just to keep the motor running or a higher spec one that could control the ignition as well.
keep us posted on progress.

if you were to remove the injection system, it is quite easy to do as it is a stand alone system, you will have to unplug every thing and trace it all back to the ecu (in the lockers on a doka and i guess under the back seat on a bus) it all becomes one 1 loom as it disapears above the gear box, it may be worth keeping the dizzy and the ing amp etc (for your sparks. then i would you would have to find a suitable carb and manilold to fit on, if it were me i would look as to what the problem is and look as to how much it is going to cost to repair the injection system. they are quite simple systems to work on, test and fix.

you can see the injection loom next to the engine in this pic

good luck with what ever route you take neil

There are two control units; one (the Digijet ECU) is a black box (about 6in x 4in x 1in) fitted to the left of the coolant reservoir, the second (the idle control unit) is hidden behind the O/S rear light cluster.

fitting carbs is a retrograde step unless its its dells.

your mv has the best injection system.

try unplugging the lambda sensor and see if it makes a difference

if the lambda goes off it can give similar symptoms as the fuelling is everywhere.

unplugging the lambda takes it to a safe map.

Cheers Jason, I'll try that.

So I'm not the only one with the problems you are talking about, I too are in the process of going from injection to carb. Mine is a 1.9 petrol, watercooled which over the past 11 years has had an intermittent problems of over fueling etc. I have tried replacing the ECU and driving with the lamder sensor switched off - in fact this has been off the past 10 years as the van would not run at all when connected.

At present I am waiting for some bits and pieces before I can have every things switched over, would be really interested to know how you have got on and if you have noticed any difference in economy, preformance etc as I am getting told different things about making this switch.

Best wishes

simon

Does it say DG on the block as injected 1.9's are GW
unless someone has retro fitted an injection set up... If that's possible?

Which may be why it's overfuelling ... If it thinks it's attached to a 2.1 ?
