Spare wheel under the front

Tried my 215/75 Grabber AT2 M+S Tire under the front with its 7J wheel and it looks promising.
The outer edges seem to be a snug (very snug) fit inside the bits that cant be changed.
At least its not going to rattle about, even if it may need prying out when its needed!
The bash plate is also happy holding it, but I think the tire is coming up against the gear lever box.
Can this be reduced in size a bit? I may be making some modifications to lower the bash plate slightly,
but want to get it all as high in there as possible..
Anyone else done or thinking about doing this?

I saw some pics recently of short hinge extenders (welded or bolted on) to allow a fatter tyre to clear the gearlever housing, might have been on samba but was a simple and effective mod.
I think they had trimmed the clamshell at the back edge too.

Oh yes I think I saw that,
but mine is a different breed,
a heavy old bash plate, very solid.

There are others better qualified to answer this one even though I've got a syncro lever assembly in the workshop... I think that the selector rod passes fairly close to the bottom of the box. Worse on a 2wd 5-speed than a syncro, so you may be able to get away with something like a 25 x 25mm bevel on the front edge of the box.
Would it gain you enough room to close the bashplate though?

Thanks thats useful, it inspires me to start by pushing the wheel up into the hole, then make the bar carrier cradle, then weld my bash plate bits to it, or use it as a modification pattern in some way.

Yes, I was really hoping that my wheel would fit underneath, and it seems it will.
Too busy at the moment to give it my full attention and modify the carrier, but having the spare rolling around inside puts it high on my to-do list.
