Thermostat o-ring

Hi folks,
Working on 1.9 dg engine.
I am in the process of reconnecting the solid metal water pipe, which runs behind the pulleys and belt, into the thermostat housing.
When I try and ease the pipe and o-ring into the housing the o-ring inevitably slips out of the locating groove and slips further down the pipe! The o-ring came with a full gasket set so presuming I've got the right size. Done all the obvious things with vaseline, grease and trying to hold in place with jubilee clips!!
Has anyone got any tips on how to do this fiddly little job or is it just a matter of perseverance and patience? Mine is wearing thinner than the o-ring I'm working on!
Any thoughts or tips are much appreciated.
Cheers!
