petrol problems

so the engine, gear box, tank are all in, all running very well. then looking on the underside and the was something dripping, oh bugger, it was petrol leaking from the where the spigot exits the fuel tank, i am guessing that i must have snaged the spigot at some time during the removal and insterlation of the tank or i did not line up the strap correctly and it has binded on the out fuel out let, the leak was coming from above the spigot as it was coming from the tank side of the strap (hope that makes sense). so is there any thing that i can do to fix this?
thinking out loud is it possible to drill out this spigot (it looks like it is in a round section of plastic with in the tank) and reinstall a new section with a new out let spigot with a rubber seal sandwiching it ( as per the sender unit).
any help or surgestions very welcome. neil

I would JB weld the crack, if it has fractured around the spigot plate, then talk to a plastic welder. You would need all of the fuel out so could drive up on ramps on the off side to tilt the tank.
The JB weld might not stick so well to the tank plastic, but Araldite might. Could make it drivable quite quickly.

Borrow an outboard motor fuel can from someone, and stick it in the doka locker till you got time to sort.

thanks for the product link the jb weld stuff sceams to fit the bill just want to confirm that is is good to use on the nylon tank. i was thinking about plugging the old spigot outlet from the in side and out side, at luck would have it the sender can be removed to gain access to the inside of the tank, on , then i was thinking of tapping an new threaded spigot with a (nut bolt and seals on both sides. in a slightly different location.
thanks neil

I didnt know the tank was nylon, jb weld does not stick to polypropelene.

hello Neil
It was a pleasure meeting you on Friday. Sorry about the leak.
I know it might be a long shot but the first thing that come to mind that might work...Is a fibreglass mixture applied on top of aarodite.
Keep your chin up and keep that smile going....

Araldute wont set with any petrol vapours about.. but seems to be fine once cured..
BUT.. gluing it might not be the answer.. weld it or as you have suggested a bolt on patch and new tank outlet might be the better solution... but you do need to find a good seal..

Neil rang me last night about this and I admit to saying Nylon when what I meant was Polypropylene
I think you may be right there Simon, nothing sticks to PP so a plastic welding service is what's required. There must be people who come out to repair stillages and fuel tanks on farms?
Worth a ring around before reaching for the cone drill and making the situation worse...

Have you tried a soldering iron?

i is on the list of posable solutions, but i have removed the tank sender (to gain access to the inside). i then removed the tank filter and the plastic container (about the size of a small ice cream box) that it is housed in, the filter is threaded and secures the plastic container in place, the filter and the plastic container also tapers down to locate in to the spigot via the thread at the bottom of the filter, the base of the filter is about 40mm diamiter, i have found plastic fuel tank repaire kit, which is an epoxy resin, gonna give this ago, i was thinking of puttying around the plastic container (the bottom where it locates in to the spigot) so it will spread and the be held down tight once the filter is nipped up. fingers crossed!
the one bit of good news was that the uk wholesalers were in Mitcham which is only 4 miles from home. cant be all bad?
got to go out now but i will post up the info about the product. later on.

Replace the tank! Unless you get the repair spot on first time you'll be doing this repair for the rest of your days!

I've a couple of petrol tanks. One is from a SIKA not sure of the other until I take a look - you're very welcome to have one.
