Hi folks,
new member, my first post so be nice!


I've been looking for a roof bed for my 89' westfalia california high top for a while now but to no avail
The previous owners of our van had the roof bed removed. the side runner rails are there but no upper bed.

Just wondering if anyone has pictures of one in situ and how the mechanism works. Im wondering if it would be a difficult job to make one up.
A few pictures of the components would be really handy so I could get an idea of what is involved.

P.S. even better if anyone has a spare westy upper bed left over from a hightop to poptop conversion that they want to sell!

Whereabouts are you? I'm sure there's somebody with one not a million miles from you, so you can go have a looky-proddy.

It's fairly simple. There's a vertical flap, to stop stuff sliding off whilst on the road, and a sliding section which travels in the grooves in the side section. Much more simple (and less elegant) than the pop-top's fold-out section. Then just the mattress, trimmed foam.

Ahh, i have the flap part still in place so all I need is a slidy section and a mattress so?

I saw this on ebay and thought there must be more to it than just a board..

if its just a board then all i need to do is get the dimensions and make one up

The front has a pair of nylon-looking bushes, which fill the groove, height-wise. I presume the back is likewise, but short of trying to clamber up there, there's no way of telling. The sliding board itself is c.600mm front-to-rear, full-width (obv), and has the foam (c.50mm deep) press-studded to it. It slides forwards, drops down, and traps your fingers between the back and the fixed bed... Evil bit of kit.

Hi Larkin

I am looking for exactly the same bed board. I have all in place except the board that pulls forward and travels in the grooves. At the moment I have a heavy duty board that we pull out and it sits on top of the shelf ridge - this is not pretty but does the job and is sturdy. I must admit though I would love to get my hands on the actual VW part - so if you find someone who can get their hands on some, please let me know!!

Doesn't look much like the movable section of the bed in our high-top Westy.

Doesn't look like much more than a bit of scratty ol' ply, tbh.
