I'm looking for advice on using / installing a standard calor gas cylinder. It will be used to run a 2 burner smev hob.
Does the cylinder have to be encased in a metal box? or is it sufficient to site it in the cupboard below the cooker
secured with a strap to the cupboard wall and air holes through the van floor.
Any advice would be most welcome
Jake

I have two 4.5kg blue bottles in a cupboard. Not strapped though

Just being nosy Cruz but why 2? Would 1 x 4.5kg cylinder give me enough pressure to run a smev 2 hob cooker?

Yes you do need a hole in the floor to vent any leaks should they occur. My bottle is not secured by a strap - more of a purpose built edge to stop it sliding about. I've seen them secured with straps though so it's up to you what method you employ. Must be upright though

I have two bottles but only one connected at a time - once one runs out, swap 'em over

Thanks guys. Just phoned a local motorhome dealer service dept.
was told as i'm not a dealer or trader, I am not tied to the regs. they "suggest" encased in a metal box as a fire break and holes in the floor. as long it was secure the metal box wasn't strictly necessary.

That aswers your question for me.

Don't want to wake up in Wasdale and the like with no gas left for a brew.

I bought two 4.5kg blue butane bottles for 99p each on ebay then went to the calor gas centre on Factory Lane, Penwortham for refills (they replace the bottle too). Saves paying the £30 deposit per bottle or whatever it is.

When I fit my propex I will be swapping one of them for a propane bottle.

PS. Don't forget the regulator

Cheers Cruz, I like the "Don't want to wake up in Wasdale and the like with no gas left for a brew."sketch. valid point.

Managed to scrounge a 4.5kg calor gas bottle from an ex camper at work so we're half way there.
