Need to source a Replacement Ignition Key

Hi All,
I wonder if you might know where I could get a replacement ignition key and how I would identify which one I need. The van is 1984 B reg diesel and I managed to lose my ignition key (don't ask!). No problem, I thought initially, take the spare and get another one cut. Get back to the van check the replacement works in all the door locks, no problems there, try it in the ignition and nothing

Won't turn at all even with some light jiggling etc.. Tried the original spare and same issue. I remember trying the spare when I got the van and there wasn't a problem then.
Hoping someone can point me on the right direction here as nothing is coming up when searching the forum or the internet at large.
Thanks for any advice
Matt

Without the original vehicle documents and the original key number you will have to change the ignition barrel and key so either buy a complete used second hand one or buy a new barrel and key from VW and do the strip and replace, if the doors are on a different key then one or the other has been changed previously, usually the doors, and the door locks are the only place the key number is marked

You do know that you have to move the stering wheel back and forth[left/right] otherwise the key wont turn.
good luck.

Hi Aiden,
Looks like the doors have been changed at some point. I compared to a friends key and it looks like my spare has been damaged so we are going to try and get it fixed otherwise I will have to change the barrel as you advise.
Hi Dave,
Yes this worked with the original key but not the spare.
Many thanks to you both for your help

Anywhere near Dartmouth?? If its just a worn key I can try and cut a new one with "guessed" less wear.

I have 2 totally different looking keys for my van.
Both operate the front doors however only one will work the central locking. The one that works the central locking wont work in the ignition or open the sliding door, the one that works the sliding door works in the ignition. Think at some point I will get a full new set of locks (especial now I've recently snapped the key in the ignition so will have 3 keys for the van)
New cylinder and key £8.50 plus VAT from GSF
heres the link on how to replace the cylinder

Hope this helps

Thanks All,
Per your suggestion a "guessed" remake now does the trick for both the doors and the ignition but strangely the central locking doesn't work!
