Decided to service carbs (30 yrs old). Dismantled/cleaned inside. Replaced fuel cut-off valves/accelerator pump diaphragms. Vacuum diaphragms below auto choke (left hand carb came out easy, right hand had to take off auto choke assy and jiggle). Reassembled carbs.
Decided to check throttle valve gap, left hand carb OK (holds gap as Haynes book), right hand carb does not hold gap after holding choke flap closed/opening throttle 1/2 way and releasing.
Does throttle valve gap apply to both carbs or just left hand for tickover ?
Also where do vac pipes go from dizzy ? The one from tapered end of vac unit is onto left hand carb but not sure were the one on the back of the vac unit should go ?
Have pics off 80/90 site of engine top, looks like it should T off and go to metal pipe connecting right and left carbs and vac unit on air filter.
Noticed there is temperature regulator on air filter top near engine vent pipe. Should there be any pipes off of the two tubes on this and where to ?

sorry i cant help you but i have the same engine witht he same carbs and would like to do the same thing, are you a mechanic or did u just decide to have ago, i am a little nervous about taking them apart was this hard to do??

The right hand one from the air box connects to the valve on the main air inlet on the right rear of the engine bay. I'm not sure what this is for though?

I can't help with the carb settings, that's a can of worms I haven't had to open yet. The Haynes looks like both carbs should have the same gap between the throttle flap and venturi wall. You're not measuring the gap on the choke flap by mistake are you?

Reply to Elmo Makaroy - I am not a mechannic but have always (40 yrs +) done my own motorcycles and cars. The carb strip & service is not too hard just a bit fiddly. Take photos of carbs in place first for elec connections & fuel lines. Take carbs off and clean, spray with carb cleaner. Carb rebuild kits £20 each from VW Heritage. Work on clean bench, use Haynes book to dismantle one carb at a time. Deep breath ! Most is straightforward but did have trouble getting vacuum diaphragmm under choke unit out of left hand carb and had to take auto choke off ! Use carb cleaner on inside of carb. Take out jets carefully, blow through holes. Check brass pipe fixing on top of left carb top, this was loose on mine. Fix with super glue to seal.

Please make sure you renew all petrol pipes, pump to carbs with unlead suitable pipe, as 80-90 fire warning. Mine were replaced before I bought my camper 2 yrs ago with crap braided type pipes and had perished without being driven - warning !!
