Due to ill health my van has been sat on the road since October not moving. So, today I thought I'd rectify this! I fitted a new battery as the old one was flat, and a bit tired, so figured it'd be £50 well spent to get a decent one in. Tried to start it and the started motor is turning but the engine just wont fire. I've checked the fuel filter, and it seems to be clear (took it off and blew through it ok?) and checked the carbs, the flappy bit at the top (butterfly?) on both are moving without resistance and moving equally when the accelerator is pressed. The left carb smelt of fresh petrol, the right didn't but couldn't tell if it was dry and didn't fancy putting my finger in and wrecking things even more! Checked all the leads are connected etc, so whats next? Could something be seized from sitting so long?

Any suggestions much appreciated, I need to get the van rolling asap before my next operation prevents me doing anything again!

Take a little fuel and fill the carbs? Then try? That should let the engine run long enough to get the pump pumping!
Push all the leads on the plugs?
lead from coil to dizzy secure?

Fresh fuel...it does go off you know!

Hello,

Do you know how to test for a spark at the plugs.

The easiest is if you have a spare plug, a pair of insulated pliers, (or at least a good rubber glove) and an intrepid assistant.

Take 1 plug lead off, put the spare plug in, touch the metal part of the plug to a good earth on the engine, ignition on, and spin over. If there is a good spark then use the advice above, not more than a tablespoon of fuel please.

It should fire up.

If all else fails, can you get someone to give you a tow start.
