Hi Folks

I have a rear fog light fitted and working.

I would like to fit some on the front.

Would this require a seprate switch for MOT?

at present front fogs are NOT part of the mot

so its up to you how you fit them.

usuall use th same folamp switch as the rears but 2nd position , so rears come on first.

Front foglights have one purpose only: to annoy the "pooh" out of every other driver. It is never foggy enough for them and they tend to remain on until the MOT tester turns them off once a year.

Apologies for the rant, I'm sure your not one of those drivers.

The standard switch contains just such a light. Presumably the OP has one, or else he'd have failed the MOT for his rear one.

Using your rear fog switch the second position (as said) will give an indicator light and a fuse with suitable wiring.
Check for power at the switch terminal

Yea, I can't fathom the price bracket they're in considering all the faults: fog lamps stuck on, no bulbs in the indicators, no rearview mirrors and massive understeer on roundabouts.

I use lots of narrow roads in the north of scotland, not easy to see the road edge sometimes in poor conditions.
I wanted to try some on the fornt to see if it helped any.

If they are for normal driving conditions. Wouldn't you just need spotlights rather than fog lights. My van has 4 additional lamps, it came with an MOT and don't see why it would pass the next. Oh and the switches light up but are two separate switches. I plan to fit a 2 stage switch so that they are both run from the one and the grill ones come on first followed by the bumper mounted ones.

Spot lights should only come on with main bean and fog lights should only come on with dipped beam. A correctly wired set up, with a pair of both fog & driving lamps wired in, should switch the fogs off when you go to main beam.

As it's for country road driving in poor conditions, I'm guessing the OP would rather have a set of low level fogs to see the edges and run on dipped beam to avoid the glare back from a set of spots.

As said before an original 2 position switch should be fine

Just to add to the useful stuff other people have said - using position "1" on the two position switch for the fog lights does not light up the indicator light, in case you need that. It only lights up on position 2.

The vw fuse box has options for fog lights coming on with side lights or with dipped beam. You can get a feed for the front fogs feed via relay 7 (standard 4 pin relay), and the existing fuse for the front fogs, via the fog light switch - the location of the feed for the lights is here:

I also added a couple of pictures, and described where the options are for them coming on with side lights or main beam here - I've stuck with main beam, but some people prefer it with side lights I think. There is stuff about the legality of it in the wiki - I'm not sure myself.
