Gear box oil ?

There''s a slight grating sound in 4th and 5th gear in my 2.1 watercooled - nothing that sounds terminal or particularly loud but annoying because I don't know why it does it ! Definitely doesn't do it in 1st , 2nd or 3rd.
Could it be the gearbox oil needs changing or topping up - if so how can you do this - the gear oil has never been changed.
Advice as always much appreciated.

Two plugs..drain plug with magnetic pickup on the bottom of the box and a straight bung on the gear change side.
Undo both, drain, refit the lower bung and refill so the oil comes to the lower edge of the fill hole.
NOTE* I'll keep my fingers crossed for you mate as noises like this can be an indicator of more serious issues.
I'm sure Aidan (resident gearbox geru) will be along shortly to add his words of wisdom.
Take a picture of the magnetic bung and it's accumulated growth...often an indication of whats going wrong inside.
75W/90 GL4/GL5 semi Synthetic gear oil (must say GL4 in the spec) 4 litres from memory but check.

Thanks - I'll try changing oil and see what comes out with the oil ! Can you get at both plugs from underneath?

Yes....the bungs have a 17mm internal hexagon drive like the head of a 10mm bolt. The bungs are tight so you will need the proper tool .

De-SORNed van today for the summer. Decided not to try changing gear oil myself so took it to my local "man" who did an engine oil change as well as gearbox oil change - didn't cost a fortune ( £70 ). Good news is the oil that came out had virtually no nasties in it - bearing in mind the gearbox oil has probably never been changed in its 22 year life - the noise has now virtually disappeared and the gear changes defintely feel easier.
Can't believe its been nearly 5 years we've owned our van and it still looks as good as when we first bought it !!
Reckon we'll be going to the big VW weekend camp here on the Island in August even if we do live only 5 miles away from the site.

Pleased for you mate.....40 quids worth of oils and a filter, so £70 all in was reasonable.
Camp on the Island? where is that then?

Looks like a good show, we would love to come to a show like this but those ferry prices are just too high!

I know what you mean - Residents do get a discount ( allegedly ) when travelling off the Island but ferry fares have been a contention for many years. Its a price you have to pay for living on the Island - but as I was born here I think the Island life is worth it. We did up sticks in 74 but got back to the Island in 86 and despite travelling across the water to work we have stayed living here without regret.
I think Red Funnel are offering discount ferry tickets and possibly Wightlink may as this looks to be quite a big event.
