What are these crimps and where can i buy them please?

Hi Guys,

All the proffessional stuff i see with crimps on them have the type of crimp that has no insulation like this:

All the ones i use have insulation on and frankly, are rubbish. I've experienced electrical failures before because of the crimps coming loose.

Looking at the way the wire is wrapped around the crimp looks very good quality and i want some of the action.

Does anyone know what these are called and what sort of crimping tool i would need? Also a good place to buy them would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ringo

I get something similar from my local Conrad store.
I don't have the crimping tool so I solder the wire into the gully and then tap the wings over the wire with a small toffee hammer.
As final touch I slide a piece of heatshrink over the "crimped" area.

Here's another type the would lend itself to the solder method very well.

The problem more than likely lies with the crimping tool rather than the crimps. What sort of tool are you using 'cos if it's the cheap flat ones you get for a fiver you might as well crimp them with yer teeth. I use a ratchet crimp up to 6mm cable and don't have any problems with loose connections at all. You also have to ensure the crimp isn't too big for the size of cable.

These are what I use ... Image

£22 from Screwfix, though I'm sure others will have them as cheap if not cheaper.

^^^^ them's the buggers you want

I haven't seen a hand tool for crimping like in your picture Ringo; I suspect that sort of crimp might be used in automated processes - although that's just a hunch.............

Thanks guys...

Yes - i have considered those - but was really after the proper tools to do the crimps in the photo.

I've seen people do it in garages so it cant just be an aoutomated process surely?

Linky not work.

They do have some "wire end" crimpers - i wonder if they are the ones?

Cheers....

I said it was just a hunch.....

based on the fact I've never seen them done by hand OR seen a badly crimped one. Even given the right cable, the right crimps and the right crimping tool I've still seen some blokes make a right pig's ear of things....

I can't get it to work again either. Go to conard-uk.com or maplins and search for uninsulated crimp connectors.

take a look at Vehicle Wiring Products, plenty of different crimps and tools, not cheap mind some of them but they are the ones

We use a hydraulic press type where you swap the jaws for different cable sizes and lugs but they're for much more heavy voltages than commercial vehicles.

You need a crimping tool for non insulated terminals. Available from vehicle wiring products and other places. The Ripaults tool is a very good but even the cheap ones produce better crimps than ones for insulated terminals.
