cv's or shafts

I drive a 1982 Katastrophenschutz bus (Aircooled and all original) and have done trouble free for nearly 4 years. Recently we experienced a loud knocking noise from the rear loud enough to turn heads in the street. As the bus had covered over 100,000 km's I decided to replace all 4 cv joints. The oe cv's slid off the drive shaft with ease but the after market cv's slid on even easier. Does this mean that the splines on my drive shafts are worn or are the after market cv's a slack fit? A test drive confirmed all was not well, although subdued the knocking was still there. Can anyone throw any light on the situation?
