Depends on which distributor is fitted. Early models twin vac 5 deg ATDC with both vac hoses connected. Later single vac 7.5 deg BTDC vac hose off.

are you sure? I've had several CT engines and not heard of that...

Yep. Thats why it is important to check which distributor is fitted.

The bleed through from the reverse side should give you a clue.

Hello,

Absolutely, Start from 7 1/2 dtdc, and I'm testing various set ups even 8 1/2 seems good, considering that 98 ron petrol, (or at least French petrol), has changed considerably these last few years.

To run the timing as far advanced and with good compression, you must have an adequate battery, as you are pushing up the cranking voltage, (esp on a cold morning ) :!: :!:

Cordialement,

:ok

thanks  I can see that...... maybe I need to ask a different way round - where did you get the V.A.G Service Workshop Bulletin from/ is there anyway to obtain one/a copy of?

Be aware that advancing Timing on a CT = cooked heads which they don't need much assistance to do well , one of LAurie Pettit's tricks to make the 1776'd CT's last longer is to drop the compression

Hi,

Sorry for jumping in here, but I need to find a timing scale for my 1600ct engine. Does anyone know where I can find one?

Thanks,

R

Hello,

What is your CT setup :?:

pistachio wrote: She started up first time, good old girl! We took her for a quick test drive, she started off OK, moving but driving like a shed, coming back up the small hill to the house however she lost all power and we chugged along in 1st. John diagnosed this as dead points. We swiftly installed a new condenser and looked on ebay to replace the 009 with a Bosch SWDA. We managed a steal with a re-built dizzy for £12.50 and a new diaphragm unit. Basically the 009 dizzy was "pooh" from the start.

So we went skiing.

The following weekend we took the carbs off, we stripped them down and cleaned their important components in the ultra sonic bath. We reinstalled them as they were originally set. The right hand carb was flooded and everything had been over cranked to get the tick over down. So we had quite a bit of tuning to do. This gave John an opporunity to build a tuning contraption!! Here are some short videos of the state of the carbs before and after:

Before:

After:

I can do you a template to paint the timing marks on the turbine tinware.

Cordialement,

:ok

My CT setup is stock with the single vac Dizzy non electronic ignition. Is that what you meant?

Hello,

Assuming you have a Solex PICT 34/4 carb.

I run my CT 1600, with conventional ignition etc: 45 degrees of dwell, 8 degrees BTDC at 1000 rpm with vac hose off, 20 degrees of advance at 3000 rpm with hose on.Carb auxilliary pipes blocked.

I can make up a template for you to paint onto your turbine housing.

I get 28 mpg, with a top speed, (on the flat on motorway) of 113 KPH (confirmed on GPS)

Tintop, (with minimum weight interior).

If you need help setting up the carb, I can give advice, but I'm just a bit far away to pop over. :)

Cordialement,

:ok

Hi,

Yeah have a 34/4 carb on it. There are loads of vacuum pipe outlets, but unsure where they go as well! The template would be great, and any help tuning the carb would be appreciated as well.

Thanks,

R
