Where is the gearbox code?

Where abouts on the gear box is the code? I have found some numbers under a load of dirt near the drain plug but couldn't see the code.

Thanks in advance.

No, mine what pretty much complete. We spent the day putting it back together as much as possible to make sure I had all the bits before I took it.

If I change a DS box to an ABL what else will I need to change other than the bell housing?

DS is Aircooled/early diesel 4 speed gearbox ABL is late petrol 5 speed box, so linkage, gearbox mount, engine bearers (early engine and late engine position are different), input shaft, and possibly some engine stuff like coolant pipes - I don't do diesel so not fully sure on the last bit
that is assuming you have a pre 83 van and the DS is what was in it originally

Thanks.

Yes, early diesel.I want a better cruising speed but a much easier install. What box would you recommend?

DK and bigger na engine like a 1Y
ultimately top speed is directly related to power regardless of gearbox

if it's a 1.9 it will be cast in big numerals on the block on the nearside

I had a look and it says 1.9 TD? Where the turbo?

Ninjaturtle the pict looks like there is no turbo fitted. The turbo is bolted to a specific TD exhaust manifold the down pipe to the silencer is then bolted to the turbo. There is also a TD inlet manifold for the TD fuel pump.If its a 1.9N engine such as a code 1Y and stamped on the block 1.9 TD it means it has the cooling oil jets inside the engine block so it can be run with a turbo. The normal asparated 1.9 engine (NA) has an exhaust manifold with its outlet for the exhaust gasses connected to a down pipe then to the silencer but no provision for a turbo to be fitted to the manifold. The NA inlet manifold is diffrent to a TD manifold the pict looks like it has a 1.6 or a 1.7 inlet manifold with an airbox so the engine can be run NA.This is how my 1.9n 1Y engine is run in my van even though it has 1.9 /td stamped on the block but fitted with a DK code gearbox.

Thanks for the help Aidan and Camper.

The block is embossed with 1.9 TD. Can you give me a really rough figure if I was to try and source the bits second hand to fit turbo? I would just be toying with idea at this stage as the van needs lots of work and I need to prioritize.

Parts list required to run it turbo a simple conversion are.Angled JX TD sump for flex oil pipe or baxters fitting kit for flex oil pipe to turbo if its a standard 1.6 sump.JX TD Inlet manifold &JX TD exhaust manifold& JX TD fuel pump .Parts come up on ebay or on the for sale forum.I have a 1.9 na 1Y engine fitted and an improvement in performance &MPG can be gained by using the caddy 1Y inlet&exhaust manifolds. To fit the inlet manifold it requires bashing out the side panel & top of the chassis rail .Ive allready fitted the exhaust manifold & fabricated a down pipe to the 1.6TD silencer and its been running fine. The next job will be fitting the inlet manifold.
