Thought these might be of interest to someone, kinda fancy one myself.
FAR more versatile than having a winch bolted to the front of your motor... if significantly more tiring.

i use Tirfor winches regularly for pulling trees over, good device, basic.
i hate them. heavy unweildy things, with lots of use they seem to fray their cables.
but, you wont get more dependable and solid.

I take it you did note that this auction is only for the winch and handle. ie no rope included and I bet that will cost an arm & a leg.

I used to use Tirfor winches when I was a tree surgeon in the late 70's / early 80's. They were the biz for pulling big old Elm trees over (we did lots of that after Dutch Elm Disease bit). Having seen the winches on the front of LRs and T3's and what they can do, I would only use Tirfors for tree work now - they are very heavy to lug around in your already heavy Syncro.

Hi, I'm always buying items from this company, just remember all the items for sale, tender, auction etc have no guarantee, I've also used these winches in my time in forestry, they are very good & reliable however they are very heavy to carry for long distances

Those kind of winches are not all that good at pulling out of the poop backwards though. ie, the direction you came from. Ive always thought that a winch carried around in the van and then attached to pull in the needed direction makes an awful lot of sense, rather than only having one on the front.

Hmmm...A demountable r/c winch that you can fit to either end, with quick-release shear pins (like a height adjustable LR tow hitch uses)...Could be an idea worth persuing. Assuming you haven't already buried your winch in the bowels of your syncro.
(Note to self: must stop taking pi$$ out of patrons)

Got one of these winches myself. Used one in my travels round oz. I wouldn't have had the balls to take on some of the serious 4x4 tracks in the outback without one of these in the car. Mine is smaller than these with a working load of 2 tonne and weighs around 20kg including the 20 meters of cable. Not that heavy me thinks especially when compared to a stuck syncro . It's great that these winches can be used to pull your car out not only front and back but also sideways. I've had to use this winch a number of times for recovery from angles in which a front mounted winch couldn't operate. I also like some aspects of front/ rear mounted winches as they don't take up space in your car and are more convenient being always set to go.

It's of no use now but we have just thrown ten of these away complete, I'll go skip rummaging on Monday to see if they haven't already been taken?

Like mentioned amazing bits of equipment used them many of times.

It's mazng what we throw out 2.5 litre land rover engines, good axles, anything that we have no room to keep the stuff.

Our "new trucks" come with winches so old turfer winches are no longer needed.

Even BFG tyres that fit landy rims brand new get thrown all the time. VW gearbox equivalent oil is also wasted even the engine oil it's safe for dervs/ bentley's/ rolls Royce. I use it in my cars and my mates it's also a detergent oil very expensive stuff.

If anything of use comes up I'll post it on here. And see if anyone wants it

Yeah, there was a report out last year that the Defence department was the most inefficient buyer/planner of any government department, and that's saying something!!
