Garmouth, NE Scotland. Know it?

First an apology, this is not about camping. My brothers wife is even more anti camping than mine. (I can just about persuade mine to go camping- she enjoys it once we're there though!!).
Anyway, in their wisdom they have decided to book a cottage in Garmouth, Scotland for a week mid June Does anyone know anything about the area? Any ideas on things to see and do. (Chill out ideas please, not into white water rafting etc). Also, getting there! I have looked on mapquest etc and it suggests (from York) A1, A66 and skirting Glasgow. Looks to me to be better to go via Edinborough! Any tips, ideas, warnings etc most welcome.
Thanks in advance.
PS, anybody live close by?

Many years since I headed up in that direction from Durham.
Personally i'd have done A1 to A68 at Darlington and gone the scenic route via Jedburgh to Edinburgh.
Other route "looks" faster as more miles are via motorway, but .... it certainly looks a longer mileage,.... A68 from Bishop Auckland to Edinburgh used to take about 2 hrs, Aberdeen about another 3 to 4 depending on traffic , just as indicator for time....
Very picturesque route and area!!

Used it when we went to Trossachs in 2009. Thought East Coast wasn't so bad

The midges leave me alone, don't like old meat! Chris had problems though! (She stopped smoking NYE. Maybe they like smokers, in which case she'll be ok this year).

It's a bloody long drive ain't it!

''Garmouth NW Scotland'' ????????
Keith, are there two Garmouths or is your sense of direction still really bad? How about Garmouth near Elgin in North East Scotland.

And the winner of todays "spot the deliberate mistake is..."
Well spotted Steve. I've not been well!

Yes, that's the one. That could have been a nice detour!!
dansimpson, that's the way I was looking at it too! Done the York to Burntisland run lot's of times and that's the way I've always gone.

Golf, Speyside single malt Whisky, freeze your buns off looking at the North Sea and if there's any kit left in the RAF have a butchers at Lossiemouth.

I think ding-dang-dhu is the closest member.
I love it up that way. The route depends on how much a rush you are in.
I like the coldstream road from Newcastle then head accross the Forth Bridge and head up the A9
Dolphin Watching is big in The Moray Firth

Hi your nearest town is Elgin which is an easy place to get round. It has a Saturday market which is indoors at the roundabout by asda.Inverness is 50 miles away and always worth a visit (I would say that as it is where i stay)if you do visit it is also worth while going to Drumnadrochit to the lochness visitor center.Findhorn is a lovely village near forres and only about 30 mile drive and well worth a look. The findhorn foundation is a nice place to visit it is 1mile out of findhorn and it is a self contained eco village.
Hope this is of some help

Used to go there as kid in the summer, gorgeous part of the country, loads to do and see around Moray, I would go up A1 to Edinburgh, head for Perth A90, then on A9 up to Aviemore and cut across toward Grantown on Spey then Keith on the A96, fantastic views.
