Need to do this, my windscreen surround metal is badly corroded and I thought it easier to get the repair sections (don't really want to replace the whole panel). VW Heritage have them but they are over £100, Gunzl has them in germany & with delivery they are under £70. Am I missing something? Why is VW Heritage dearer?
Also, before I go down this route I have noticed others have made up repair sections, is this hard to do? The corner edge is badly corroded so I can't see how I could make up the edge (or is it just a bit of angle welded in)?

Have looked at wiki and followed cov's & chickencoop's description but can't quite see whether it's angled or a gentle bend.

Advice please.

Depends how bad it is but for a job like this you replace with small pieces of steel and/or weld as you go - as I showed in the WIKI. Picture (1) in the multimage pic shows a piece of steel welded in to replace a badly corroded section if you look close. You can use quite thick steel on the actual lip as its two pieces spot welded together. You need to tap away with a small light hammer and find out whats rotten and what isn't and go from there. Not worth buying a repair panel - unless the whole lot has gone

The job can be done in a day though, no probs. To grind away in the corners, use a worn grinding disc as it has a smaller circumference. Basically you have to judge it as you go. small pieces of steel can be bent into a right angle using a vice and a hammer if corrosion has spread a little, otherwise its a case of a jigsaw puzzle, welding in smaller pieces to suit. On the lip itself, providing you can get back to something solid, you can repair some sections with weld alone but remember its much harder to grind into shape than straight steel.

Thanks for the reply, just looking at it with windscreen in, and after some poking with a screwdriver, it is worse than yours was in the same area. In places the damage has gone down to the front panel. Have ordered a new windscreen rubber from the chap you recommend (chris) and will have to hunt down a repair shop that will take it on.

Chickenkoop and I do them in Summer months but we're not in your neck of the woods. If its very bad, it may pay to remove dash too so you can get to both sides. They can and do rot below the lip, but again its all weldable - just takes a bit longer. The other option is to buy the front/bonnet bit (around £80+) and fit it complete plus a bit of patchwork at bottom of A pillars.
