As am looking to do a major refit looking for inspiration especially hightop panel vans of course campers and panel vans would be appreciated as well. Any advice on hard wearing and easy clean materials would also be much appreciated (as it is a Syncro ) thanks in advance paul

Top Tip

Dont use MDF, Its heavy and falls apart when wet

or chipboard for the same reasons.
that seems to be an important difference between british and german conversions.

i say get a westy interior off german ebay.
since they were making campers for vw vans from the very beginning, they have had the longest time to work everything out.
unless you have to have toast, in which case ignore me.
unless yours is rhd.

You don't fancy the "industrial kitchen look" then?
You can get sheet materials in what's called "structural foam" which is a hardwearing, rigid expanded plastic. It's a lot stronger than it sounds and is very light. Fix to a lightweight tubular steel box-section frame and off you go.

I can vouch for that. Carthago and reimo are good too.

sally has 2 packs of daisy stickers in various and sizes white with a yellow centre, very chic so i am told? they would look grate on the hi top. then instead of paul and dave from ireland (and andrew of course) you could be daisy and buttercup from ireland, and andrew or course,

probably wouldn't stand out on the hightop (besides she's been called Rachel) but would look much better on Andrew's van maybe we could sneak down and do a midnight stickering

Not one for the purists....but we love it, and suits the bus IMHO.
A friend of mine is a joiner - lives near Falmouth and does work on boats etc. This is his 2nd interior for us, so we've learnt from previous attempt at what worked and what didn't

It's Birch ply with oak venners, some westy bits made to fit RHD, Smev sink and 2 hob grill, Electrolux 3 way fridge. Tough, easy to keep clean. Probably heavier than some, but lovely to be in for any length of time

Its well known that I am not a lover of stuffing furniture in vans but if I was going to Id do something like yours Sonic. It looks very neat and well thought out. No use for Paul though cuz its far too clean and doesnt leak oil!

Thought I'd ressurect this thread as what I've done so far might be of interest to anyone looking at doing an interior especially a high top panel van interior especially as one looks lke its coming back from spain thats the more or the the same as mine but 16". The cabinets are the old westy ones which I personally prefer as they don't look so cold as the later grey and white ones. My inspiration came from yachts as despite trawling through various camper interiors I wanted something a bit more luxurious (may someday face all the units with maple to get that real yacht look someday) but also being a syncro something that would be easy to clean and somewhat water/smell proof. All walls and the ceiling have approximately 4-5 layers of themowrap insulation and also sound deadening foam all seams were treated before doing all this. Wall panels were the original thin ply which lined the walls other side panels lining the roof and the bottom of the bulkhead were constructed from plastic corrie board (same material as estate agent signs) this being light and having additional insulation properties as well as being very easy to cut and fold. All surfaces were then covered with cream vinyl leatherette which is of upholstery quality so has good wear characteristics and can be wiped clean with soap and water and polished with Mr Sheen (recommended by the upholsters who did the seats, and supposedly not as harsh as Son of a Gun which I was informed can crack vinyl and is a lot cheaper ) Seat and cushion were covered with vinyl leatherette of a automotive quality and despite my reservations are not uncomfortable to sleep on and do breath.

More storage space now the fridge has gone a porta potti fitts in the bottom if needed

A sliding window was instaled in the bulkhead to let in more light yet still maintain the cab and living area seperate, which it better for heating security and also sound deadening. will be installing a blackout blind on the window at a later date. Also a huge amount of storage over the cab area behind the drop down wooden panel

Propex lives under the front double seat found on the vans so three can sit up front. This position for the propex was selected as it sits a lot higher in the van and thus avoids the problem of flooding which many of the lads have experienced wading



exhaust and inlet pipes sealed with high temp flange sealent (loctite or similar)as you can see the propex sitts a good three or for inches above where they exit the body thus making the position of the propex around the height of the battery boxes

Still a lot more to do changing the vinyl as not that happy with it have a refillable gas bottle to install sort out the storage space a bit better instal a bunk over the cooker unit fitt the table do some mods install blinds and tie downs also a gas outlet for a BBQ amongst other things and box off the propex and I'm sure a million other things someday eh
