Oh forgot to mention that when it does eventually start, there is an initial rattle sound coming from the front of van!

Possibly the choke can't set correctly now? Not sure to be honest bit that's my first thought. Rattle could be the cable vibrating against something, why did you need to tighten it?

When fitted it was a bit slack, goes much better now but starting is a problem. Could something have come loose?

Hi,

What engine do you have - it will make a differnce to the answer to the question.

Cheers,

Just about to ask the same, Alex. I think I may be miles out suggesting choke, the more I think about it, but what engine would certainly help a bit

Its not the choke then!

I've no deisel expertise I'm afraid so I'll bow out of this now and leave it to the oil burners on here....

Good luck,

Alex

Hi - You didnt inadvertantly loosen the cold start cable by any chance? To be honest ive never looked at it closely on my van, but on other diesels of this vintage it comprises a thermostatic unit screwed into the block with a cable to the fuel pump (not electrical) that operates a bit like a choke and ups the fuel supply. I couldnt find more than a scant mention in my just kampers orange manual and its too b****y cold to go n have a look! Someone here can probably help on this one

Also worth chcking you havnt knocked a connection off the feed for the glow plugs.

The rattle sounds like the general protesting noise a desel engine makes if it dosnt have enough heat / fuel, they really dont like it when its cold like this!

BTW if you ever get stranded withis problem, boil a kettle of water and pour it over the cylinder head then turn the key- should start straight away - its a common trick on tractors etc!

Hope this hepls, Tom

Hello,

the "choke" is actually a timing advance for the pump and is also a cable - I agree with Tom - definitely check this cable is acting as it should. Are you having problems starting more when cold or hot? Advancing the timing when hot may result in incomplete combustion, which might manifest itself with smoke when driving.

As Tom says, If it's having trouble starting just when cold, then definitely check the 50A fuse to the glowplugs and that they definitely have power from the relay.

Good luck sorting it out

Ewen
