worn rear bearing noise on overrun

Hi

Drove my camper to the sound of a new noise this morning.

After checking previous posts i would appreciate any advice or guidance on tracing the worn component

Sounds exactly like a wheel bearing - a speed related rumble at the rear but stops immedieately if i drop the clutch and take her out of gear...

Annoyingly not happening all the time (yet) and on this afternoons test run has dissappeared altogether

I "made" it do the noise and its most Most noticeable by changing down on overrun going down hill - any tips on how I trace if its drive - shaft or gearbox related ?

Strange but not apparent on changing up through the gearbox or at a steady speed above 30mph

oh - the van is a devon 1982 1.6 CS - 130,000

Have changed gearbox oil in last year (GL4)

Thanks in advance for any replies

Possably the imnput shaft bearing ?

My clutch does sometimes rumble when pedal depressed so I recon I will have to replace the clutch and bearing at some point in near future -

Hi Matt,

do you think it's possible it's a cv joint and not a wheel bearing? I thought mine was gearbox related, but then Aidan gave me a good and easy diagnostic test - take the driveshaft on the side where it's happening and pull it left to right sliding within the cv joints - upwards movement or rotation within the joint not so good. This has the effect of redistributing a bit of grease around a bit, and so if you can definitely make it happen under some condition, and then stop it by doing that then it might well be a cv joint.

Thanks Ewen

I wll give that a try -

Driving home tonight it only made the noise once and Im one of those drivers who is always listening out for strange noises when driving - drives the wife mad !...

When I find what it is and fix it I will of course post an update

Thanks again for the tip -

any furthur thoughts or fault tracing tips from other members very welcome...

Matt

Hi, It sounds like that when you press the clutch the noise disappears in all cases? it may be the release bearing in the clutch. If it is worse or appears to be when cornering then look into wheel bearings. CV`s tend to start clicking if wearing, and by holding them and try to rotate them, sometimes with the wheel raised will see if there is play in them.

Try to eliminate things one at a time and try not to confuse yourself by looking at everything at once.

Let us know how you get on and what you find out.

Hi Matt,

hope you have this sorted - sorry if I confused the issue by adding more things to your list of possible causes. I am the same with listening out for funny noises and drives my missus insane too - but she kept a snare drum in the rear cupboard without telling me, which I can only imagine was some sort of sick practical joke..... I very nearly put a post up here describing a sort of jazzy percussive noise which I couldn't figure out.

I have a busy couple of weeks ahead which "fortunately" include camping solo in south london !!!!!

- sounds mad but Im using the crystal palace camping ground -

I will update the forum on the wheel bearing - clutch / cv joint / gearbox / related noise and thanks v much for the pointers on tracing the problem
