Wonder whether any one can give me an insight into the specs of the following VW oils?
Ive checked on vagcat and the oils are spec'ed for the syncro. Like to know whether they are semi synth' or synthetic

Front diff- sae 75 w-90. VW specification number: 501 50. Part no: G 005 000.
G/box - Just a part number for this one; G 052 726 A2 .

Had actually read the wiki but wanted to know more about the genuine vw oils. Did some more research and found the front diff oil is-

" The Audi specified synthetic transmission oil is SAE 75/W90 (Mil-L-2105 or API/GL4) with the original G50 designation.
The Genuine Audi oil has the part number G 005 000 for the 1 liter size, it is also shown as available in the 0.5 liter size as
G 005 000 05. For those repair shops out there, also shown is the 20 liter size G 005 000 20." (unashamed c&p)


The g/box is - 02J 75W-90 GL4 VW Part number G052 726 A2. Still not sure if its a synthetic or a semi synth

Most are now semi-synths, such as the SX 75W 90s

This discussion is what made me go and buy whatever trans fluid looked good. There's so much controversy about what should and shouldn't be run in these transmissions.

Stick to GL-4 so it doesn't attack the bronze bushes and you won't go far wrong.
I ran my SA gearbox on EP90 for a while in the hot UK summer this year and it was fine, although 1st-2nd when cold as Autumn arrived was a no-no. TBH I only use 1st for hill starts anyway...
If you're in a warm/temperate climate 80W90 should be fine. If you're in the frozen North, go for 75W90 or even the F0rd spec. MT75 oil, very good but it's expensive.
There's a note in the US Bentley manual (pdf downloads are available ) which mentions running the oil level about 15mm BELOW the fill plug to improve the shift quality when cold...

i used carlube (that's the brand) 75-90 fully synthetic gl4/gl5 in the gear box and front diff, always had a smooth gear change from stone cold, i had to drain down a couple of moths ago and the oil that came out was almost as clean as the new oil i was putting in. just under 25k in 2years (that miles not km)
