Hi all, just wondering if anyone can point me in the right/ best direction. i am looking at replacing the original insulation/ soundproofing that is found on the underside of the T25 engine lid.
The existing stuff is starting to fall apart and i know of at least 3 people who have had engine fires resulting from this insulation dropping and catching fire. I seem to remember seeing an advert for foil based replacement, but can no longer find it.
Is anyone able to give me information as to where i can purchase such replacement. (failing that, i will possibly devise my own, but if there is something out there it may be preferable). Many thanks in anticipation. Ian.

Thanks for your reply. i wish i knew where i had seen the foil based stuff. it was both insulating/ soundproofing and fire retardent. i remember seeing a picture of it fitting the lid perfectly. Thanks for your link. I have looked at your link and will definately bear this stuff in mind and hopefully get it sorted. if any one else reads this and knows of the foil stuff, i would be grateful if you could let me know, for my curiosity as much as anything.

ps. reference the bit about being a member for a year and only 1 post, it is not the first issue i have had along the way, but the forum is so good that all my other queries have already been answered so i have not needed to start a new thread!!. if i can go another whole year without having any major issues, i will be more than happy!!!.. thanks again.

You do know that most newer vans came with tis kind of lid ...plastic and solid foam. They can be got cheaply in the bay

NO Ianirp, that is not good enough, youve joined a year ago, browsed the forum gleaned the info you want so have sucked a tiny bit of the life out of it and Im sorry but you will have to put a little back

Many thanks for your offers of information. i had mislaid all my logon information and have not replied to you before now. I am now back up and running, which is more than i can say for our trusty camper (terminal gearbox problems!), but that is in the process of being rectified, and i promise to do my best and to return something to the forums!!!

does anybody know whether seals direct do anyhing appropriate for the engine lid seal?

There's many an option here, was going to use something from here but not decided which one yet

Many thanks for your replies and advice. I have searched some of the web links mentioned, and will work out the best option, but at least now i have got some good options to choose from.
In the interim since writing this post, the gearbox went, and now the exhaust needs replacing, so i am afraid the insulation/ soundproofing has had to go on the backburner again!!. Many thanks anyway, i think my lottery numbers are going to come up next week so i can get all the jobs done at once!!

The silver insulation / sound deadener is called fatmat or dynamat and can be used In the engine bay..

Think I would run with the original, the stuff poseidon decribes is ok for the other parts of the bay
I think a lot of the problem lies in the original soaking up fuels over the years and then becoming flammable as the product when new was flame retard I beleive,

Just chipping in on this one. I managed to get some combustion modified foam sheet (so it wont support fire) from a guy at the Tatton park VW show and trimmed it to fit in to the two spaces. It needed a bit of trimming to slip under the lip of the recess, but it wasn't difficult and its fixed tight so it wont come out without a fight.

It look good and deadens the sound. The Guys name is Tom and the number I have for him is 02170841174.
