Heater Valve (above spare wheel)

Hi All,

As part of my tidying up of the cooling system, I have drained the coolant and now dropped the rad for inspection etc.

When I got the van, the heater was permanently 'on' in the cab - removal of the dash revealed the bowden cable end had come out of the lever and was slightly kinked. I sorted this out and the valve now operates well from the lever. However, with the rad out, you get a good clear view of the valve itself. Whilst the condition seems to ok.. I can blow through it when in the 'closed' position, albeit with some resitance. This implies to me that it isn't 100% - would you agree? The other thing is, I was surprised that the valve just 'dangles' and has no hard fixing - is this how they all are? It is fairly rigid and works, but I am tempted to fab a bracket to hold it firm.. any thoughts?

I have some pictures that I'll put up as it'll help anyone in future know what it looks like.

Cheers,
Stu

Do you get cold air through the system with it closed? I had to replace the valve on my old camper because I couldn't turn the heating totally 'Off' which was a pain on a hot summers day. I tried blowing through the faulty unit but couldn't so the fact you can doesn't bode well - which is why I asked if you've tried it......

Thanks for replying.

When I got the van it was permanent hot - which was nice on the journey home in 28C! I manually closed the valve, but never got 100% cold air through, so I guess you're right - doesn't sound promising. I've ordered a new valve, so will stick that in - seems the best idea while I have the access etc.

Just need to decide whether to fab a bracket up..

Cheers

New valve came through and no matter how much I 'huff' and I 'puff' I can't blow through it when closed. Looks like I might have the luxury of turning the heating off this summer

valve is only supported by the hoses it fits onto!

some valves, possibly early ones seem to allow a small by pass even when off, not sure why , there is a groove in the 'stop' which rotates

some i have found are smooth without groove and completely switch the coolant off.

Thanks for that, that explains it
